Case study five — At Home

Lynne Breese has been running a successful in-home care service for the frail and elderly in the Glen Eira area for over 25 years. Her business, At Home Pty Ltd (www.athomecare.com.au), helps people to live in their own homes rather than be placed in aged/disability care. She employs more than 30 staff and over the years her business has supported more than 10,000 clients.

Lynne was faced with several challenges due to changing factors in the aged/disability care market when she applied for assistance from the Mentor Partners Program. Lynne was matched with Program Mentor, Malcolm Stevenson.

Whilst Lynne had been running her business for 25 years, she felt that she did not have the business skills or confidence to create a business plan and know what actions to take to overcome the emerging commercial challenges. “Having the opportunity to bounce ideas off someone who has a proven record in business was invaluable,” said Lynne. “Malcolm helped me to clarify my goals, understand what strategic activities I needed to take and supported me as I learnt new skills.”

“I had total confidence that I could share anything about my business with Malcolm. One of the best things about Malcolm was the feeling that he was not a consultant who told me what to do but someone who gave me the support and confidence to go in the direction I wanted to go.”

Malcolm enjoyed mentoring Lynne. “Lynne was a very keen learner and she was willing to try things. At Home is a solid business with very motivated staf, it just needed a fresh look to ensure it continues to prosper. It was especially rewarding to help a business that provides a valuable community service.”
