Case study two — Textiles Express

George Wakefield is the founder and owner of Textiles Express, a textiles wholesale business, with a retail arm, Latex Mattress Warehouse ( He runs both businesses from the same premises at Cochranes Road Moorabbin, selling latex mattresses and bedding products from the shop front and running Textiles Express from the warehouse in the back.

George was looking to change the direction of his business and felt he would benefit from a having a mentor to discuss his ideas and challenges. George applied for the Mentor Partners Program and was matched with business mentor Malcolm Stevenson.

“Being mentored by Malcolm has been a very positive experience. I was wavering about the decisions I needed to make and felt nervous about making a costly mistake,” said George.

“What I really appreciated about Malcolm was that he did not tell me what to do, but helped me objectively assess my ideas and options and get clear about the decisions I needed to make. “During the mentoring sessions we would set action plans which helped keep me on track with my priorities and the questions I needed to answer. “I felt privileged to have the support of someone like Malcolm. He not only has an immense amount of business experience, but also life experience.”

Malcolm Stevenson was impressed with George’s business acumen, industry knowledge and determination. “George is a very sharp individual and our conversations were a two way street, as we discussed George’s ideas and challenges,” said Malcolm. “He responded thoughtfully to my questions and used me as a sounding board to check his thinking, which I really enjoyed and appreciated.

“During our initial sessions, we set some challenging goals and action plans and despite being very busy running the two businesses, George did not lose sight of his vision. I wish him tremendous success, he is very deserving.”
